The 5 steps to reducing waste using the 5s system:
1. Seiri (Sort).
2. Seiton (Set in order).
5. Shitsuke (Sustain).
3. Seiso (Shine).
4. Seiketsu (Standardise).
Tidiness, organisation. This refers to the practice of sorting through all of the tools and materials in the workplace and keeping only essential items. Everything else is stored or discarded, leading to fewer hazards and less interference to productive work.
Orderliness. This focuses on the need for an orderly workplace, with tools, equipment and materials arranged in a systematic way for the easiest and most efficient access. A place for everything and everything in its place.
Cleanliness. The need to keep the workplace clean and tidy. Cleaning should be a daily activity, with everything in the workplace restored to its place at the end of each shift.
Standards. Allowing for control and consistency. Methods and instructions with accurate data and time standards. All employees should have access to all of the relevant information and know the standard levels to adhere to, for production and cleanliness.
Sustaining the 5s System discipline. Maintaining standards and keeping the facility in safe and efficient order day after day, year after year.
